Newbie Moving from IOS to Android

I have had the Iphone 3GS from a year now. So after Watching the new Froyo Google conference I decided it's time to move to Android; Other reason was that I am a proud American and I love my freedom. I really don't want anybody or any company telling me what I can and can't do.(i think most would relate to that). I should be getting my Droid X today from Wirefly. I am a android noob. dont have a clue. Three things I want to ask this great Community:

1) I need help in what are the top essential apps I will need as a beginner.

2) Tips and tricks I should know.

3) WTH is "ROOTING". I know Jailbreaking but I heard people saying its dangerous. Advantages and Disadvantages.

Thanks a bunch guys. I hope this Community is going to be a great help and help each other out so we can make this a better experience for everybody.

:welcome: to the Droid Forums.

Tips and tricks. Just one really. Remember that this is a Google phone, so all your mail, calendar, contacts etc. are backed up by Google. A lot of new people don't seem to know that.

I won't get into all the apps but Screebl is a must have.

To learn more about rooting : http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/632-what-root-means-stop-asking.html and I apologize, that's the title of the thread.

Glad to have you in the Droid community.!

You made a good choice switching to android. Rooting as explained in the link provided above has its advantages for sure. The only real disadvantage you face is your warranty being voided. Im not sure how it works with the droidx but on the original droid there are ways around the warranty problem by flashing a stock sbf. Which just completely wipes the phone so it is like you just took it out of the box. Unfortunately this cant be done on the x yet although there are some very good developers working on it. there could be another way that idk about though. As for apps i use appbrain market a lot, it is basically a market extension that shows popular apps and trending apps. Stuff like that. I think you will find also that the people here are very friendly and there is always someone willing to your question. Even if you think its a dumb question, someone on here has probably been in your shoes at some point so feel free to ask anything!

Welcome. The first question that you asked is slowly becoming a pet peeve of mine but i guess ill suck it up. There arent really any 'essential' apps you need because you can basically do alot already without apps but apps to have are most def some organizational ones that help you organize all your apps(Apps Organizer) if you tend to download alot of them. I also recommend replacing the stock browser with Dolphin HD, its just easier to use. As for task killers well thats up to you, either let the os handle it or learn what apps to leave running. Some other good ones could be sms popup(if you like sms massages to pop up in a window and also allows you to customize ringtones to individual contacts), Zedge is another good one that allows you to download ringtones or wallpapers for your phone, ringdroid allows you make ringtones from mp3 files you have on you sd card/phone, games there are lots of them just try em, and basically any other apps that you think that you will need or help you do certain things easier/faster. Oh almost forgot since your coming from iOS you would maybe want an app that helps you transfer music to your phone from iTunes, mind you only music that is not copy protected, try iSyncr but there are others that are free but none work as well as this one.

There arent really any tips and tricks either, well maybe your question is too vague because i dont really know what you mean by that. When you run accross a problem just search the forums. Always search the forums first because most likely your question has already been asked.

As for rooting, well basically you are gaining super user access to your phone which basically means you have 'complete' control over your phone. But i wouldnt really worry about it if you just casually use your phone.

I dont think i forgot anything but enjoy your new phone. dancedroid

Welcome to the Droid world! dancedroid

It is ironic though that you have switched to one of the most restrictive carriers and devices available. But you probably don't know that fully yet. ;)

Well Its soo fast its way better than apple. I love my droid x. With froyo its way better than iphone. So far my verizon is cheaper and better than att. We will see how out goes
