Newbie: Need App to Text over Data

I have to pay for unlimited Data. But I don't have unlimited minutes.

I am looking for an App that will enable me to send messages and possibly pics etc.

I have read about Google Voice, but am unsure if this does it over Data or phone line. And it appears you can't send pics.

Any other apps that do this and how do well do they work???

Google voice will send over data, but you can also use google talk its a great app (when communicating with other smartphone owners) and it can do attachments and is built in with the phone.

It's data unless you use SMS fowarding. You have to use the GV app (and your GV number). And, yes, there is no MMS support.

Please excuse my ignorance but I am just learning about all this.

For basic texting straight to a GV number it doesn't require SMS forwarding does it?
In other words I can send a basic text or receive a basic without having to use SMS forwarding?

On the other hand

Are their any apps that allow MMS?

I have seen info about Handcent and Chomp do these do this?

chompsms does a over data selection but you have to pay them for it IIRC.
