newbie question about ESN.

i've been lurking in the HTC Merge thread. it looks like the phone isn't going to be available anytime soon. Maybe in the first quarter/spring time.

i can't take another day of my palm centro. great calendar but everything else sucks. im looking to buy a used Droid 1 off of craigslist.

here's the newbie question of the day.

how can i tell if the phone has a good ESN? is there anything i should look for other than water damage, and if the phone powers up.
