nexus keeps showing charge icon when not plugged in

Can anyone help me out my nexus rencently keeps showing the charge icon even though its not plugged in which is preventing the phone from sleeping its real annoying because its killing my battery

More than likely it is. Unfortunately this is a semi-common problem. And since it is hardware, outside of taking the device apart and replacing things (which I have heard with this device isn't so bad, even for this specific problem), a replacement device is probably in your future.

Side note: It may not be a bad idea to get everything off of the device you want to keep just in case it goes out on you, especially if it is the only method you have to transfer things and this is your only battery and way to charge said battery. Also if you are rooted, unlocked, it may not be a bad idea to undo that (although you can relock and get back to stock without USB).
