I noticed the same thing. You can produce the same affect by using the moto widget. You can pick just one number and/or click and hold on the widget and shrink the size down. If you have multiple numbers selected you can pick a default and even enable one click dial. Works Ok, but I miss the direct dial.
I noticed the same problem. No Direct Dial option when adding a shortcut per the instructions.
I found this solution: Hold/touch empty screen to bring up menu > Motorola widgets > Contact quick tasks > Select a contact > Select a number > Done > Click: Phone icon > Check: Enable one-touch calling for this widget > Next time you click the phone icon it will dial, you can also re-size the icon to make it a tiny box...
