No sound-restart doesn't help

While downloading music on my Droid X last night, there was suddenly no sound. If I plug in my headphones, sometimes I hear sound, sometimes not. Placing calls I also hear no sound unless I hit phone Speaker or use headphones. I restarted, reinstalled battery and SD card and no improvement. I hadn't used my headphones in days before I lost sound. Please help!

I did a factory reset. It's okay now, but I'm afraid to plug in headphones again. Before I did the reset-went to Settings> Sound> Media audio effects> and it said Wired stereo devices "connected". Now with the reset, it no longer says connected. Do you have any idea if it's the headphones I'm using or the phone? I hadn't used the headphones in several days when it stopped working. Downloader I think was Music Downloader Pro from Ayai.
