No voice mail notification?

I have the Moto Droid and am a relatively new user but I do not get any notification when I get a VM, none in the bar and no audible tone. I see the "missed call" notification but nothing indicating I have VM. I did a search on here and several people seem to have been experiencing the same thing but nobody ever gives an explanation of what if any solution is found. I don't have and have never even looked at visual VM which some seem to associate with this issue.
Any help would be appreciated

Call 611. Sounds like your phone isn't getting notified by the voicemail system.

Called 611, they had to remove and then restart my VM service now it gives me the cassette tape looking icon in the notification bar, now I just need to figure out how to make it give me the audio alert as well.
