Non rooted GB, how do I root

My wife's phone has never been rooted, and running the OTA GB. her phone has been messing up and needs to be restored. Is there any way to root it without loosing app data?

I've tried gingerbreak, but it never seems to work, it just gets stuck in the exploit.

correct. some apps have the ability to save data, just check in the settings for a backup option

Thanks a lot, I'm still learning a lot, but that's what I had to do to my DX. She just doesn't need all the capabilities of root, so she never let me do it for her. Oh well guess she will just have to loose everything. All the important stuff we can back up. Its just the little things like angry birds and a couple others

There's an app in the market that can back up angry birds. Tbh has an easy zip but it has caused soft bricks. The 2part zip is easy enough.

Doesn't Titanium Backup Pro use an unlock code? If so, I don't think you can use it on 2 phones at the same time
