Non rooted tethering on a Droid X

I just got a Droid X a couple of days ago. My first smart phone. I am now researching tethering.
I have found tethering apps that work on non rooted phones & apps for rooted phones. What is the advantage of non rooting over rooting?

Correct me if I'm wrong but generally from what I have seen is that non rooted tethering will either cost you money from verizon or you will have to pay for the app like pdanet. But there are free versions of those apps but they are limited for instance pdanet makes it so you can't go to https sites unless you buy the full version.

Rooted tethering apps on the other hand like wireless tether are free with no restrictions!
