Not sure how to get OS with "market" on my Motorola xt702

China Deep

I screwed up and bought the motorola xt702 (which is, I believe, a Chinese version of the milestone). I thought it was from S. Korea, not China. . .anyway, i really dig the phone actually, it's slick. . .but the problem is that it is using a 'for China' android 2.1 operating system that does not allow me to access the "market." That makes the phone extremely depressing, because it is so cool, but so limited. As I understand it, I should back it up and 'flash' it (which I'm not sure how to do), and then install a different OS (which I'm not sure where to find and am not sure how to do). Can someone help? I could use some specific details on the process. . .if it is even possible.

Thank you,

China Deep

To be honest. I'm not sure you can do that. I believe the Milestones bootloader is still locked and I would assume any variant of that would be as well. You would need a signed .sbf to reflash the correct OS.

no hope?

So there's really no hope? Darn. I should be able to take the phone back. What OS, phone should I be looking for to have access to "market". The reality is I am in China, so Verizon's plans aren't going to do much for me. But the apps on those phones, while still being able to make local calls in China, would be very useful. Any suggestions? Any one know?

If you can return the phone do so and ask which android phone that is available for your area can access the market place. The store where you picked it up should be able to assist with that. Someone local to that phone market would be better suited to get you going. Then we can help you with any android related issues that do work on your phone going forward.

Looking for Android Market in China

If anyone figures out how to flash a non-mainland China ROM that includes Android market and allows vpn connections to work I wanna hear about it!

Well, I'm having the same issues with flashing a new ROM onto my XT702, BUT if you're simply wanting to be able to install APK files onto your device, just search on Google (suing your desktop computer) for the name of virtually any Android App you want and add "download apk" to your search query: You'll find hundreds of results options to download the APK directly to your desktop.

Then drag and drop the APK file to your micro-SD card (use a USB card reader attached to your PC), and then pop that micro-SD card into your phone:

Browse for your app using the File Explorer, and click it to install.

It's allowed me to add everything from Google Maps, to games, Docs2Go, and YouTube

Good Luck:

It certainly works the other way around - I have flashed a XT702 ROM into an A853 Milestone and it all works (I wanted to get the simplified Chinese input methods) - as far as I can determine, the only hardware difference between the phones is that the XT702 has an English/Chinese key next to the right Alt key on the keyboard and the A853 has a "Menu" key in the same place.

The safest way to proceed is to find out what your current version is (I have only seen 2 XT702 ROMS - one is build number SGC02040 and the other (older) one is SCG01260, get a full .sbf flash for that for disaster recovery and then just try and reflash with whichever ROM you like the look of (I was using SHOLS_U2_02.36.0_UCASHLSMR2EMEAB1B806D.0R_PDS003_USASHLS00RTINT_P016_A015_HWp2a_1FF).

The XT702 *does* have a different bootloader, but they appear to be using the same keys - and if it's a problem then you can always flash the regular 90.78 BL into the phone over the Chinese one (it will still boot the XT702 firmware). It's worth pointing out that an "RSDLite" reflash wipes everything on the phone - the root file system, the /system partition, the data partition and the recovery - the only things that persist are the contents of the SD card.

Motorola Released the 2.2 upgrad HERE

Check this out:

Motorola has the 2.2 upgrade here:
如何使用SDå¡å‡çº§XT702 - Motorola Mobility, Inc. 中国

It's in Chinese, but if you use Chrome and then "translate" the page you should be able to figure it out.

I tested it and it was pretty easy - just save the appropriate build to an SD card, and then follow the instructions.

Still no Market App, Gtalk, or Maps, but WIFI HOTSPOT works and some Flash supported.
