Note 3 navigation voice

Since Samsung decided to ditch the stock voice for navigation (which is dumb IMO, it sounded good) I've been trying to get Samsung's own "HD" voices to work. So far I haven't had any luck. I change to an HD voice (UK English), and the sample plays fine, and then it downloads the voice pack and shows that it's installed. But when I go to navigation, I still get that crappy robotic non-"HD" Samsung US English voice that sounds worse than the nav voice on my old OG Droid.

I've tried rebooting, I've tried clearing cache/data for maps, and nothing seems to work.

Has anyone managed to get this to work yet? How'd you do it?

Thanks

To get this repaired go into the Settings> scroll down to Accessibility> go to Text-to-speech options. Since you are using the Samsung settings go under Preferred TTS engine make sure that Samsung text-to-speech engine is marked. Below, you may change the speed rate which default should be (normal) turn up the volume and Listen to an example. If the sound is correct then all is fine, not go above to the Samsung Engine and highlight the edged circle in the far right box, 1st setting can change the Language, 2nd settings can change the gender and language of speaker, 3rd can install a language if not already installed. I believe Samsung Apps (which I have disabled allows other TTS languages that can be added.) To make sure the settings are correct check the Listen to an example from the first screen before leaving settings. I am using a different Text-to-speech option which requires Root and the Google Text-to-speech Engine, also there is no "Listen to an example" through this hack. If interested here it is.

That's my problem. I have done all of this - set it to UK English, downloaded the HD voice pack, played the sample, which works fine, and it's still defaulting to the US-non-HD Samsung voice in navigation.

I'm a wimp and so will not be rooting the phone until the warranty is expired.

This could be a bit of a larger issue since you have tried to default the language to UK English, while the default language of the device is defaulted based on the SIM Region Lock to the United States, unless your device is an entirely different model version. Either way in your instance, and since you have not choosen to Root your device I would recommend contacting Samsung directly and try to get them to sort out a solution to your problem with this. With Root we can change the settings of the system apps to act and behave the way that we want them to however, when your not using Root, the control comes from the manufacturer and it is not always a simple devisble solution that can fix the problem the way you want, so please be aware of that. Good luck either way.

Note 3 Navigation voice help

Hello,

I am having the same issue. Downloaded the high quality UK female voice. Plays sample well, even uses the voice for Google Now. But Navigation (maps) still using old, robotic voice.

Anyone figure a way around this?

I don't know if this will work for you but it does foe me here in US...download Google Text-to-Speech from store...then follow these directions...you have to change settings in language and input first not just in the TTS settings. Good luck and I hope this is what you need.

Galaxy Note 3 users can install Google TTS as a replacement for the less than stellar option Samsung provides. So if you've found the Note 3's default voice to be jarring and way too loud, Google's app will give you a means to tolerate using TTS again. To make the switch, just go to Settings -> Controls -> Language and input -> Text-to-speech options, and switch to Google's engine there.
