Notifications only vibrate

I tried searching and couldn't find something close to this, but this could be a dumb question.
I have my notifications set to a ringtone, phone is not on silent but when I receive a message or e-mail, my phone still vibrates.
I've tried restarting my phone and messing with the sound settings but it just vibrates, doesn't play the notification sound I have set.
Any sort of help is great, thanks.
