Notifications post-Root and BB

Before I rooted, if I got an email and read it, then the notification would be removed. Since I have rooted, they stay there until I clear them from the Notification panel. Is there a setting that causes this?

Also, whenever I get an email, I get it twice for some reason...one from my Gmail account and one from the email account...how can I get rid of the double notifications?

I'm assuming that nobody responded because they think I should search it but I have...those are all related to Handcent and I don't even use that. This is based on my email, not SMS...any ideas?

pretty much the same way you do it for handcent, open gmail, and tell it to not notify you anymore
