pattern to unlock screen

So I've had a problem a couple times in which my phone is inadvertently activated while I"m sitting in my car. The answer to this problem is to use the pattern feature. However, then it's a 3-step process:
1. power button,
2. slide down the screen thingy,
3. enter my pattern

I want to omit step #2. Power button and enter pattern.

Anyone know how I can make this happen?
