Phone dead overnight

Last night, phone was almost fully charged. Left on charger overnight. This morning, went to wake up and phone unresponsive. Finally got it to boot up by holding down volume button and up button. Booted to recovery mode. Did a normal recovery and finally started. What happened?

No, its my wife's phone and she does NOT like me to make changes. Thought I was going to have to pay extra to go to an S5 - contract not up til 9/15 - or go to another provider and just absorb the Verizon cost.

been long since she rebooted the phone before that?
i have seen phones lockup from excessive up time.
reboot once a week isnt a bad idea. i have made it up to 580hrs before random issues started happening.

Maybe that is the problem. Cannot tell you when it was last booted. Will make sure it is done once a week?
