Phone finder?

Does anyone know how the phone finder on the Thunderbolt works? If you go into settings>location then you can check or uncheck phone finder....it says this belles find your lost or stolen phone. How exactly can you find your phone this way? Thanks.

Pretty cool actually. I prefer Seek Droid though, tends to be more accurate.
