phone loses service (phone and data) when in the cold

Recently when i've been outside for a while with the phone it will lose all connectivity and can't get it back no mater what i do. If i do a simulated battery pull it comes back. THat is the only thing that works. There is no 3g/4g icon and the signal bars have the red x as if i'm in a no service area. Until today i'd never seen it happen when i hadn't been in a no service area and then come back in, but this morning after snowblowing it was lost and i have a very strong signal at my house.

Could this be the sim card?

I read an article recently about smart phones and cold weather. Most smart phones work good down to about -10. The article didn't mention if those phones had SIM cards or not. It couldn't hurt to talk to Verizon about a new SIM, it sounds like that could be the problem.
