Phone won't stay in 2.01

I can revert my droid back to 2.01 to prepare for rooting. It will tell me that I should update to 2.1 which I can decline. Then when I install update.zip when it reboots it seems to be back in normal 2.1.

What can I do?

Also, what should the firmware version be when it is rooted correctly?

Delete the update.zip file from your sdcard first. Then try it again. Or just go ahead and root the 2.1 with the SPRecovery.sbf file.
