Hi everyone Im hoping you will have some suggestions. A friend of mine got a droid 2 and is having some awful call distortion problems. My droid 2 is working great and never any problems but her new one is pretty bad. Im going over there after work to try to fix it but dont really know where to begin (she is not very tech savvy so I'm going to do the troubleshooting). She is still in the 30 days so a return is still an option, however I'd like to try to fix it first. So with that all said, here is the problem:

A few days ago she said people were having trouble hearing her but before I could take a look at it she said the problem went away. Now again today it started happening so I called her to hear it for myself. Her voice is completely distorted and static, the volume seemed high but I couldnt understand one word she said the distortion/static was just terrible. Ive seen a lot of static posts on these forums but they always seem to be "annoying static" or "minor static", what I heard was terrible, there was no chance of understanding her. Apparently on her end everything seems fine, but on the caller's end its horrible. So has anyone run into this and is aware of a fix or what the problem is? I had her reprogram using *228 but that didnt work. Right now my only thoughts are a full factory reset and then exhanging the phone. If anyone else has other things to try Id really appreciate the help. The only other thing I can think of is possibly a bad app? She has installed a lot of apps, are any of them known to negatively effect call qualty in this way?

Thanks so much for any help!

Oh, I should also mention that I asked her to look at the reception and see how it was, she said it was full bars. So I guess it isnt as simple as her being in a bad spot, I'm pretty confident there is something wrong with the phone.

Just because there are full bars, that doesnt eliminate the possibility of a tower or signal problem.

I feel like I read a fix for distortion around here, let me see if I can dig it up.

Yeah Ive seen that in my searches as a possible fix, I guess the only reasons I shy away from it is because I hear the other codec(s) may not always be available depending on where you are, and in those cases you couldnt make a call at all. So I thought it may be better not to mess with that, but I suppose anything is worth a try if a full factory reset doesnt work. Thanks again for the help. If anyone else has things to try its much appreciated, thanks!

A new development that may be helpful. She just text me and said that if she uses speaker phone the person on the other end can hear her fine, if she turns off speaker phone it goes back to the distorted voice again. So it doesnt sound like a network/tower problem to me, its something to do with the phone....

Try a factory reset just for kicks, and then have her return the phone.

Did you ever get a fix?

I'm having the exact same issue. Phone was fine yesterday, but now I'm completely inaudible to people on the other end (all they get is static) unless I use the speakerphone or a bluetooth earpiece. Tried battery reset, etc. (everything short of a factory reset) and no dice.

Any word on the cause? A cure?

I'm curious if this has anything to do with the 2.3 upgrade that got pushed to my phone this morning.
