Private contact list on androiid which does not require google

I recently had an experience where my contact list which was previously stored on Google Contacts, was compromised.
Many of the people which were in my contact list where sent emails from somebody in Peru.
What I want to know is there a good android app which will allow me to enter my contacts, but NOT have them sent to Google.
I believe with this new information war which it being instigated by countries such as China and Brazil. that there is a need to store contact information ONLY on the android and not be sent to Google.

Turn off contact sync in accounts under Google.
