problem with contact photos

hello all

i've read a number of threads where the poster just didn't understand to click on the photo icon, in the edit screen, of the contact. but i have a much different problem:

I'm running an S3 on Android 4.1.1. I can edit the photos of my google contacts in my phone, but not my contacts that i have input by hand. I can't even edit their ringtones. In edit I have no options for my hand-input contacts except for Name, Phone, Email.
Where there should be a photo prompt there is only the square-ish SIM logo

i have never had a s3 but since no one is helping you, ill ask a dumb question.
when it asked you where so save this new contact did you save it to the sim card? (that may not even be possible i dont know)
i just wonder why it says "sim" up there. it would stand to reason that if it is possible, there is limited space on the sim which would explain
why you cant modify the contact past basic information.

just throwing that out there, im likely way off base.

Actually that isnt a bad place to look. When I started with this phone it asked me where to store contacts
