The next new craze in cell phone tech will be the display embedded fingerprint scanner. It seems that Apple may actually be first to the gate with a new trend when this feature comes to the iPhone 8 here in a few months. However it looks like other manufacturers will have the tech by next year thanks to Qualcomm. According to Qualcomm the tech will be available by summer of next year. Their scanners will work under displays, metal, and glass.
The tech will only work with OLED displays. This means that OEMs who have traditionally used LCD displays and won't be able to use this. These sensors can apparently also detect heart rate and blood flow. The sensors also work under water. Under glass and metal scanners will be available by early next year and under display scanners will be ready by October of next year. Hopefully Samsung has something else figured out for the Galaxy S9!
