Question about Google Maps Search

I have been playing around with the Google Maps app and had a question that maybe you guys can help me with. If you perform a search for something in maps, for example "chinese restaurants", you get a bunch of pinpointed results on your map. I noticed that some pinpoints have letters over them, while others are simply a round dot.

What is the significance/difference between the two different types of icons?

From what I can tell, it's like searching Google Maps on your PC. The ones with letters are the current set of results. The dots are other results. You should have two arrows at the bottom of your screen to cycle through results. Once you're at the end of the current results (say you're at J of A-J) the right arrow will change from:
->
to this:
->|
Indicating that it will load the next set of results and you'll see that some of the dots now have letters and you can now cycles through those results.
