Is there a way to rename files/folders/shortcuts? I've searched the manual and, as usual, come up dry.

for homescreen shortcuts, a 3rd party launcher will do the trick. I just started using Nova Launcher and really like it. Long press on a shortcut icon and select "Edit" allows you to rename the shortcut.
