replacement for gallery?

any good options for rooted phone to replace gallery app. an earlier version of apex than what's out now had a cool ipod cover flow style to it, it was much faster. gallery as it stands seems very cumbersome to me, there's a lot of stuff in it that I don't want to sort through (i've tried adding .nomedia file to folders i don't want in there, sometimes it works, sometimes it causes problems for other apps to find the media.) and would like to be able to edit it better, or find something comparable which works with android system.

ps: is android video player part of gallery? can't find it anywhere in system/app or data/app?
