Replacement for my Droid 1

It's time for a contract replacement on my "rooted" Droid 1 and I'm looking for a new phone.
It needs to able to be rooted or at least have the capability of wired or wireless tethering.
Which android phone would you recommend?

The replacement d2g I got is on cm7 and the wireless tether2.0.7 works good with it. The Droid x has a much bigger dev community though

No, I love the custom roms, the tethering is key. I do like the bigger screen on the X
