Ringtones vs. Notification tones

I have read through all the audio threads and found very helpfull information about the folders to create and what to put where, but what if I want notification tones to be the same as ringtones, do I need to put the sound file in both directories? I was just wondering if I could somehow conserve space on the SD card by not doing that. Thanks
