Risks of rooting to 2.1?

:droideris: I've heard on this site about everyone rooting their phones, and saying how it is a better option instead of manually updating because you can still receive the real 2.1 when it is released. Im just tired of waiting for 2.1 and would like to see the bug fixes and new thing that come along with 2.1 (hopefully much faster). As much as i want to try rooting, i dont want to void anything or screw my phone up. Can anyone tell me the risks of doing this? And if i have to go get a replacement (say if my phone gets dropped or gets wet), will verizon still replace it under warranty??
