Root vs Non-Root

I have not rooted my phone. My flash player does not work correctly and I hear it is because Adobe changed the processor requirements. I also heard that if a phone is rooted, you can change your processer kernel (or something along that line) so that it works at the minimum requirements for flash. With all that said, I know absolutely nothing about rooting my phone, hence I would be very dangerous if I even attempted it. Are there any informational sites that I can educate myself further on rooting? Benifits vs risks? Pros vs cons...that sort of information along wit how to do all the extra stuff that a non-rooted phone cannot do.
