Rooted and want to install custom rom

Hey guys,

I rooted my droid 1 with z4root. I installed SetCPU and Titanium Backup. I also have Barnicle Wifi installed.

I want to make my droid faster, but most importantly, I want the battery life to last longer. Most of the directions I have seen require a PC in order to install a custom rom. I only have a macbook.

Is there anyway to get a custom rom that will help increase my battery life and/or overall performance of my droid? Is downloading ROM manager off the market enough? I'm most worried about backing up my info and not losing anything if something goes wrong along the way. My Droid is my primary phone, no landline. If I mess up, Im screwed. Everyone says its so easy and they cant imagine their droid without root, so I wanted to see what all the craze was about.

The SetCPU tops out at 800MHz Im assuming because its not a custom rom. I have seen people posting 1.2GHz, so I was looking for something like that.

I really have no knowledge of the terminology, so if I could get the instructions in plain english, I would really appreciate that!

Happy Thanksgiving!

If you have wifi, don't worry about a windows box. Download astro file manager from the market so you can change file names and move files. If you are using SPRecovery, you will need to move your files to the root of your SD card, and rename the files to update.zip before you flash. You don't HAVE to download a ROM, but you will need a kernel to overclock your phone. Personally, I use ChevyNo1 kernels, but Slayher kernels are popular too.

You need a kernel to go fast, but fast doesn't equal battery life.

Try the second link in my signature for how to flash a rom with RM.
