Rooting noob question

Apologies if these are the dumbest questions ever:

I'm not so much interested in custom ROMs and whatnot, but I am curious about overclocking and tethering my Nexus (when I pick it up in about 4 hours!!!!)

Do I need to unlock the bootloader and or Root the phone to accomplish this?

How much of a performance increase can I expect from overclocking the phone? Any downside to doing this?

Any links to how-tos on the above would be much appreciated as well.

thanks in advance

I myself know very little about overclocking but that fact alone steers me clear of interacting with it. All I know of it is that it increases the speed of your phone (or something of the sort) but I've read enough about it being hurtful to your phone to want to avoid it. Not to mention I don't think it makes a significant difference. As for tethering you don't need to root your phone to use wifi tethering.

This app known as FoxFi will allow you to do that all without rooting. However I personally am glad I decided to root my GNex. If you are interested in doing that I am here to help and can provide you with all the tools.
