rooting question, what is adb and hwo do I make sure not to screw up installl of root

I've had a droid x before my razr. i have the file for root and have it unzipped. I read the line about making sure you have some sort of adb installed. I've also opened the file on my computer and found the batme file and it looks exactly like the youtube video I watched for installing root. Any other advice? I've seen folks have issues rooting this phone so I just want to make sure before I try it out.

Again I had a droid x used sbf files, clockwork recovery many times but I am not familiar with adb.
