[Rumor] Amazon Developing a Smartphone

Tablets may not be the only new industry that Amazon pushes into. According to some new rumors from sources at Bloomberg, Amazon may actually be prepping an Amazon smartphone too. Supposedly Foxconn is already working with Amazon on this mythical device. Additionally, Amazon is planning ahead for any patent war shenanigans before jumping into this fray. They plan to complement their smartphone strategy by acquiring patents that cover wireless technology that will help in any potential defense.

There is no word on what type of operating system would be installed on the device, but it could be a heavily doctored up version of Android just like with the Kindle Fire. What do you guys think? Could Amazon be as competitive in the smartphone market as they have been in the tablet market?

...eh. Might be spreading themselves a bit much here. They're making a killing in the smartphone/tablet market with the Kindle Fire. I mean, it feels the same way to me as Facebook developing a smartphone. Good software companies trying to get out in to hardware where the wars are bloody and cutthroat already. I don't want to see good companies get hurt, or at least involved in things like patent wars and the like.
