We will definitely be sticking this one up in the rumor category, as the track record of the original source of this story has been all over the place. Still, sometimes Russian tech blogger Eldar Murtazin, gets a bonafide leak on his hands, so we have to at least share it with you guys. His latest bit of intel is none other than the Samsung Galaxy S III, and with it comes some spec details and even a release date possibility. He even claims to have been able to play with one himself, and confirmed that it is very fast and has decent battery life. Here's a breakdown of specs that he he shared:
  • HD Screen of unshared size
  • 1.5-1.6GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz "enhancements"
  • 12MP Camera
These specs have been speculated for the new phone before, but what is new is that Murtazin claims the phone will be launched sometime in April, after it gets its official announcement at MWC next month. This would actually follow the same pattern that Samsung kept to last year with the SGS2, so it could be true, or just good logical extrapolation from the blogger. Either way, we should know something more definitive at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

if those specs are right then this will be one beast of a phone, heck, with 1.6 quad core and a 12 mp camera maybe they'll have a true true hd screen of 1080p (although as i understand its kinda unnecessary on a phone but it'd still be a bragging point)

I like the Galaxy SII but I just don't see it coming to Verizon anytime soon. We are about to get the Galaxy Note aka Journal so I just don't see the point of the SIII and Journal going to the same carrier. Both are great phones and if I did not just buy a GNex and the SIII came to Verizon I would buy it in a heartbeat. Especially with those specs!

"enhancements" is this what we are referring to bloat now? But I really do hope it comes to VZW because we got cheated out of the SGS2 in favor of its ugly (hardware wise) sister the GNex (sorry GNex guys). I'm looking for a decent phone and I like Samgsung's hardware. Maybe I'll get lucky and Moto will start unlocking bootloaders.

While you are correct that having 1080p on a phone will give bragging rights, the big problem is that to have that resolution on a tiny little screen would make text unreadable. Plus, at the smaller sizes it is nearly impossible to tell a difference between the two resolutions (except for the fact that everything is smaller). Unless you move to like a 32 inch device, (wouldn't that be a huge phone?) 720p HD is likely going to be the pinnacle of smartphone display. Now, from what I understand the Retina tech actually puts more pixels in a smaller area allowing a higher density, which gives you the illusion of higher resolution without having the smaller text. Perhaps, this technology can be improved in the future as well.

I humbly request any of our super-tech-gurus out there correct me if I am wrong on this one. I could have some of my facts skewed. Share some of the details... I am curious to know even more about this. Regardless, it looks like the SGS3 could be one of the big phones of this year...

12MP camera is overkill unless it comes with a zoom lens and a great sensor. I just wish they would perfect the 8MP before adding more pixels.

Whats wrong with the GNex Hardware vs the SGS2?

Please. This phone won't be on VZW (if it even comes to VZW) before next winter. How long was the SGSII out in the wild before it came to the U.S.?

Anyone getting anxious for this is in for a looooooooooooong year.

A quad core processor with a 12mp camera inevitably means Samsung will cut corners elsewhere in order to keep it under that "magical" $300 contract price, unless they decide they want to test that limit (carriers probably have a lot to do with that guidance, as well).

I'm wondering how long before we see a phone with a telescoping camera lens - wouldn't that enhance quality, or would it only add to megapixels and zoom?

Also agree about 720p being the limit for a smartphone. You'd have to be holding it less than a foot from your face to notice, and most people probably hold their phone 18-24" away.

You have a point there, Dusty. Thanks for being the "killjoy." :( LOL

I would disagree both technologies have been out for some time and samsung can make their own processors i need be to keep costs down a 299 price point is still highly unlikely do to the carriers I'm think some where in the mid to high 3s

hardware moving ahead of software, imo. Dualcore is still fairly new and they talking quadcores in a matter of 3 months now? I bet we'll still see new devices with GB on it. Mobile world is moving too fast for its own good imo.
