Screen Goes Black

Oh! One Eleven

New Member
Problem: When making a call or receiving a call, the screen will go black so I can't hang up or put the caller on speaker phone. I don't believe this is suppose to happen. Some times I can turn the phone upside down or shake it around to get the sreen to come back on. Any suggestions?

Along the top right of the screen there is a proximity sensor. If there is oil or dirt on it, that could make the phone act as if its against your skin, so it blanks out the screen take a look its a little red dot along the top edge. Make sure nothing is covering it and its clean.

I only see a flashing green light on the upper right corner, which comes on when I have messages, but nothing red. What am I missing?

Very top of the screen up from and to the left of the green led. PUt the phone into the light, you will see a faint red circle, about the same size of the led. Its NOT and led, it does NOT light up. It senses if you are holding the phone to your face. Make sure it it clean and un-obstructed.

The screen is supposed to go black when you're on a call and holding the phone near your face. Are you saying yours stays black even when you pull it away from your face and hold it in front of you? Do you have a case on your phone that might be obstructing the sensor? I seem to recall another thread or 2 of people having the same problem. Might try searching to see if they found a solution.

edit: Some people just get Skreebl so their phone doesn't go dark to alleviate the problem....

Yeah I've seen people have this problem also....I always told them to hold the phone flat to make the screen come back on...but I learned recently that the sensor is on the top left corner of the screen...there is an app (I forget the name) that tests out the sensors to see if their good or not.....and some people were finding that that particular sensor was defective and not working properly

Same thing going on here, but more severe.
A phone call comes in, I slide to unlock/answer the call and the screen goes black. The sensor is clean. When the call is over, I can't get the screen to come back to life. Even pushing the power button does nothing. A few days ago I could get the phone to wake up by sliding the keyboard open, now that doesn't do it anymore. The only way to wake it back up is to plug it into my charger.

Any ideas??

The sensor is above the top LEFT of the screen, if anything is in front of it the screen will go black. Make sure this sensor is not blocked by anything, like a case, dirt, or your finger, and you shouldn't have any problems. If the problems persist you might have a bad prox. sensor and you can get a replacement.

Yep, same problem. I guess I'll be stopping by Verizon tonight.

I had this problem with my first Droid. DL sensor test from the Market and see if the value for the Proximity sensor changes from 2.14xxxxxxxx to 3.0 when you put your finger over the sensor (top left corner). If there is no change, then take it to VZ for exchange.

DL'd sensor test and the proximity sensor doesn't change at all. :icon_ cry: I did cover and uncover the sensor and there was no movement in the values at all.

PROXIMITY:

0:3.0
1:0.0
2:0.0
