Security for chat/texting programs

I just recently downloaded eBuddy the other day to put some of my IM programs onto one App. After I installed I got to thinking how secure are these programs? I know it needs my username and password for the programs which makes sense, but at the same time if you supply that information does it not then make that your accounts could be stolen (for lack of a better word) so people could have access to your Yahoo, or Messenger accounts, or am I being over paranoid?
