Is it necessary to have some kind of protection on the phone, similar to antivirus on a pc?

It's not, as long as you aren't installing apps without ever thinking and checking their reviews and permissions they request.

Depends on who you ask- some say yes, some say no. I don't. I know someone slipped a zillion apps on the Market with bugs in them. Not sure if the bugs did any harm to anyone's phones or not. Honestly, I don't know what to tell you. I would think that even if you get a bug you could always SBF back to stock (it isn't that hard- even I can do it!) unless the bug damaged the hardware in some way.
