What does it mean when you get a notification just like a voicemail but it's a word balloon with a plain smiley face over it?

You got a text message. If you pull down the bar you can see a preview of the text and click it to read the whole thing

For any notification you should be able to pull down the notification bar and click on the item to get to the app notifying you.
