smilies in swype

So i was wondering if anyone knew how to enable to smiles in txting with swype. They work in gchat with swype but not in a normal txt msg

Press and hold the smiley key in the lower right and you get about 10 different emoticons to choose from.

Yes I know that I'm talking about the little green alien represintation of the symbols

same question. my wife mentioned that her DROID 2, which was a replacement for a defective DROID 1, doesn't have the little green guys.
