I want to be certain I understand. In settings - accounts, when you tap the Google account the only error in all the sync options is contacts?

Yes that is correct, everything else syncs, I get a confirm on all of my other checked boxes, App Data, Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Gmail, etc but Contacts NO and at the bottom is says "Sync is currently experiencing problems and will be back shortly"

That begs the question of how long has it been happening? I can't come up with a reason for Calendar and G-Mail to be syncing when contacts aren't

Not quite sure how long its been going on, just noticed it today. Prior to the last time I looked it all seemed to work. I use Gmail daily and I noted my contacts were all updated. Now for some reason no go.. Would there be a way of reinstalling or re doing the Gmail account?

Update
After your last post I ended up deleting my Google Account and reinstalling my account info everything seems to be working and syncing up correctly now.
Guess I should have tried that in the first place but I wasn't sure about it.

WTG, that would have been one of my next suggestions.

Ha thanks I just am not good with doing things like this and most times if I end up thinking about doing it or trying to do it I end up screwing things up way worse than being a newb even if its a dumb question or has been asked or posted before..

But thanks for the quick replies and help.
