Some contacts not adding to text message

When i go to send a text message, in the to field i can just start typing someones name and it will show up with their number and then i can select it. some names in my phone do not work with this. any ideas why ?

The contacts that don't work probably don't have a phone number set as "mobile".

One other thing I found out today was they have to be formatted like this (xxx) xxx-xxxx I forgot the dash and could not send a text to that number.
