We have some big Sony news to share with you folks today. Sony is officially retiring the "Z series" of their Xperia line of smartphones. They are shifting the name to the Xperia X series now. Jun Makino at Sony Mobile had this to say, "“I can't comment on the future, but we will not be releasing a Z6. There will not be a Z6." He added that from now on, Sony will be "turning to the next stage, with the Xperia X series.”
Here's another quote straight from Sony's PR department,
"The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design."
It seems a bit odd to move backwards on the English alphabet. Maybe someone in marketing thought the X name sounds cooler? Of course, we have seen the X used by multiple different OEMs from Motorola to OnePlus to HTC. Still, at least Sony is refreshing their smartphone branding. The Z series was getting a bit haggard.
The report also shared that June is likely the launch timeframe for Sony's Xperia X series device. Will it be much more than a name change? What do you folks think?
Here's our dedicated section for the next generation Sony smartphone (we just changed the name of the forum to match the new info): Sony Xperia X Series (formerly Xperia Z6)
