Here's a marketing head-scratcher for your Tuesday afternoon pleasure... there are rumors that Sony may be planning to rebrand their latest Xperia Z4 as the Xperia Z3+. Here's a quote explaining the source of the rumor,
The above picture allegedly comes from one of the packaging inserts contained with an official accessory for the Z4, the SCR30 Style Cover Window. As can be seen at the top, an “Xperia Z3+” is listed. Provided this leak is accurate, it would suggest that Sony is planning to rebrand the Z4 when it hits international markets.
From one perspective, this actually makes a great deal of sense. When Sony revealed the device recently, it was met across the web with collective disappointment because it is such a mediocre upgrade from the Z3. Thus, rebranding it as simply a refreshed Z3 is logical. On the other hand, why bother revealing it as the Z4 in the US at all then? They should have planned it that way to begin with for all of their markets.
Of course, there is more to the story than just that. Supposedly, Sony plans to announce a brand new premium level flagship device that will trump the Z4 (which shouldn't be too hard). Maybe they listened to the complaints about the Z4 and decided they should downplay its marketing when they finally do announce it for international markets. As far as a different device is concerned, many of us in the industry are holding out hope for a radically redesigned new device worthy of Sony's name. We will keep our eye on this and let you know.
