The quickest and easiest way to update to the latest and greatest version of Android for modders is to just flash a new Rom based on the latest stock image via recovery directly over whatever firmware you are already running. There is now a Rom for the Nexus 5 based on Marshmallow stock! You should be warned that this is debloated to the extreme. Basically all Google apps minus the playstore have been removed. Of course you can install the ones you need from the Play Store.
There are a few addons such as Cyanogenmod gallery, cyanogenmod eleven, google messenger, and es file explorer. Other than that this is essentially a stripped down stock image that you can flash in custom recovery. This is not even rooted. If you want root just boot into the rom then boot back into recovery and flash the modified kernel and supersu. Both files are included in the rom thread. Just be sure to boot into Android first before rooting or you will end up in a boot loop. Head to the link below for the downloads.
