I have the newest milestone from bluegrass. I wanted to update to Ginger bread 2.3 rooted? Is this possible? If so where can I download it? Also I need to back up my stock firmware incase I need to return the phone.
i dont think you are going to have any luck. i am by no means a milestone know it all, but i keep up on pretty much all android news.
the milestone phones have a locked bootloader which means you are not going to see gingerbread until there is a an update from motorola, which i haven't seen yet.
to make a backup, you are going to have to root the phone and use a program similar to D2/DX bootstrapper to get into clockwork recovery and make a backup from there. not sure if there is a bootstrapper program for the milestone phones.
and you can always SBF, if there are SBF files available for the phone and use RSD to flash the SBF file to restore to a stock firmware.
unfortunately for you, it seems the milestone phones are just not that popular thus not getting as much attention as some of the US Droid phones. we can make backups and flash gingerbread and flash an SBF if something ever goes wrong.
