Stop Google Chat from forwarding to phone

Google Chat forwards to my phone regardless if I have it open on my computer or not? How do I turn that notification off? I would prefer not to get notified every time I get a gChat comment.

Log out of the phone client when your using the PC.

Novice question, but how do I do that?

GMail app doesn't have a sign out feature, neither does gChat notification. Just has an "end chat" feature which only stops the chat but not future notifications.
