Stopped syncing gmail contacts

My phone stopped syncing my Gmail contacts about a month ago. Gmail and Calendar sync just fine. I have turned off phone, taken battery out and tried to force a sync through accounts-google-sync contacts. When a try to sync contacts I get a very quick error message, so quick I can't read what is says - I just see a red error message flash. Any ideas on how to fix this - Verizon store does not have clue, they just want me to reset factory setting. I don't want to reset my phone - but I will if thats the only solution. I have the same problem. Do you know what the last contact was that you saved before it started happening? I have the same problem too but I think I'm just going to have to back up what I have on my phone and then delete remove my gmail account and re-add it. I wish there was a way to figure out what all the contacts were that I've added recently so I can just readd them by hand after the resync. I don't want to lose them.
