Storing music inside the phone?

Is it possible and safe to store mp3s and playlist files onto the phones internal memory as oppose to the SD card?

and if so, is it safe to do where it wont mess with the phone to cause it to crash or something?

Will apps such as google music still be able to read mp3s from the phone files or does it have to be in a certain directory in the phone?
