Strange characters in SMS when receiving from international

I've been running into an issue where my friend in Poland will send an sms and I get weird series of characters in it such as "i@08!" does Android's SMS any idea why this is happening?

sounds like a language barrier. messaging probably doesn't have languages installed, so "invalid" characters appear. this would happen on any OS/system that doesn't have a language pack.
