Switching Phones

I have a Verizon Droid X (2 years old) that has a dying LCD - when the phone gets cold, a "grey curtain" covers 2/3 of the screen. Because I have unlimited talk, text & data, I really don't want to "upgrade". In addition, I have really not seen anything stupendous enough about the newer phones that makes me want to upgrade.

So, my question is, can I just buy another Droid X and put the sim card from my dying Droid X into the newly purchased Droid X? All the search results I have seen, say I have to unlock my phone (and that the Droid X can't be unlocked!) to swap carriers, I don't want to swap carriers just phones. Same model phone, same carrier, just a newer, working phone.
